There was a large police presence following the incident last Wednesday (17 May), as two fire engines and four emergency response vehicle attended the scene.

The woman, who was in her 30's, was hit by the articulated lorry shortly after 7pm and was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she passed away a short time later.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said:

"At approximately 7pm emergency services were contacted following reports a woman had been in collision with an articulated lorry on Queens Drive.

"The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and the Bootle-bound carriageway of Queens Drive was closed from the junction of East Prescot Road to Alder Road to allow an investigation to be carried out.

"An investigation is underway and CCTV and house to house enquiries have been carried out in the local area."

Following the accident police closed the road between Alder Road and East Prescot Road as the emergency crews gave medical assistance.

An eye-witness described the incident saying that the young woman was looking to cross the road but may have stepped into the road too soon.

Another woman said her daughter has seen the incident. She said:

"[My daughter] hasn’t stopped crying for that past hour and a half. She couldn’t even tell police what happened.

"All I can get out of her is “it was awful mum” I don’t know how to comfort her because I don’t know what happened."

Another witness said: "I came running out of the house but there was nothing anyone could do."

He added that the lorry driver was in a “terrible state” at the side of the road after the accident.

"He was clearly in shock but I don’t think he was injured. One of the paramedics were dealing with him."

Witnesses to the incident said the lorry had to be moved by fire crews after the collision and police later put a screen up around the front of the vehicle.
